Entertainment News - Spoofing Spoof Movies

Best Idea Ever?

Chevy Chase and Michael Madsen are starring in Not Another Not Another Movie. Yeah, you read that right.

At the recent staff meeting with the GameTechWorld crew, we all took a moment to rant at the shload of idiotic, try-hard spoof films that has come at in the last few years. It seems were not the only ones.

The seemingly endless streams of detritus known as "Epic/Scary/Date/Superhero/Disaster Movie" seem to have been noticed by the industry proper. (Or maybe it was all the four letter emails I sent...) Writer/director David Murphy is planning to give to spoof all the crappy spoof movies. This is either the greatest idea I've ever heard, or the simply the worst.

I think only time will tell. Though personally, with a plot summary like this "a struggling movie studio that's willing to do anything to make a mint - even if it means ruining their reputation, and running the movie industry into the ground," I think it sounds more like a documentary.

Joe Johnston will direct the Captain!

For those of you that aren't caught up, several films were green-lit shortly after the amazing success of Iron Man and the ridiculous fanboy excitement over the ending of The Incredible Hulk. These movies include Thor, Iron Man 2, and The First Avenger: Captain America. These are are slated to introduce the named characters leading up to an Avengers movie that will bring all these bad boys together.

Film Review - Dead Space: Downfall

Great prequel movie to a great survival horror game!

Country: USA
Director: Chuck Patton
Starring: Bruce Boxleitner, Kelly Hu, Keith Szarabajka, Jim Cummings, Kevin Michael Richardson
Release Date: October 28, 2008
Distributor: Anchor Bay Entertainment
Formats Available: DVD, Blu-ray

I noticed the release of Dead Space: Downfall and figured it would be worth checking it out. In case you don’t know, and if you’re geeky enough for this site you should know, Downfall is the animated feature prequel to sci-fi survival horror game Dead Space. A lot of major releases, be they movies or video games, have been cranking these little animated tie-in DVDs to stir up the hype for the main product. You may recall a few of the notables like The Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Fury or Van Helsing: The London Assignment. I know why they do it and I think it’s perfectly reasonable. Unfortunately, these movies don’t typically add anything of value to the franchise and almost never fair well on their own. This is not the case with Downfall.

Film Review - Shinobi: Heart Under Blade

 Over-the-Top Ninja Action... That Works!!

Native Title: Shinobi
Country: Japan
Director: Ten Shimoyama
Starring: Yukie Nakama, Jô Odagiri, Tomoka Kurotani, Erika Sawajiri, Kippei Shiina
Year: 2005
Distributor: FUNimation Productions
Formats Available: DVD, Blu-ray

Shinobi had a decent User Rating on Netflix so I decided to check it out. Who doesn't appreciate a good ninja flick, right? What I got was a little more than I expected... Most reviews and synopses will hype it up as “equal parts Romeo and Juliet and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” or “X-Men meets Romeo and Juliet.” Was the romance there? Yeah. He’s from this ninja clan and she’s from that one, the two clans are at war and it’s never going to work out, etc., etc.  The romance was definitely there, but I personally felt that the movie spent much more time on the action than developing the romance plotline. I consider Crouching Tiger a lot more of a ‘chick flick’ than Shinobi.

Gaming At Work: Good or Evil?

What The Boss Does Know...

Image hosted by Photobucket.comA lot of us here love gaming, but also have to work (those that don't, enjoy that while it lasts). I've noticed a trend in my office that makes me wonder. When the boss isn't around, a lot of times people play games. Now, I don't work with an office full of "gamers". For example, nobody here even knows what new games are coming to any of the 3 major consoles this month. I doubt they would care. They are casual gamers at best. Mostly utilizing Yahoo! Games, MSN Games, and online crossword puzzles. I, on the other hand, tend to bring at least one device with me every day - GBA Micro, NDS, or PSP.

The Core Counts.

We're All a Little Nuts!

After a very productive meeting with the new GTW team last night I can happily say that I am very, very pleased with the group that has been assembled. Mind you, by "productive" I mean enjoying one another's company and getting to know where we all want to go with our respective projects.

All in all, GTW is going to kick it into high gear now. We're always looking for more family members, so never hesitate to ask. If you're ever in the Las Vegas area you can also get to meet some of the team if you'd like. Let the good times roll!

Stall in Content

Duties Are Duties!

Let me first say that I have been remiss in my duties in posting new content once again. However, at least I have a few good reasons for it this time. The GTW Staff is going to be having a sit down this week to get everyone on track. With that in place things here should pick up nicely. Also, I'd be lying to you if I didn't say that Fable II, Warhammer Online, and Fallout 3 aren't eating into my waking hours. Both Fable II and Fallout 3 offer well over 40+ of gameplay and Warhammer Online...well it's an MMO so the gameplay time is whatever you make of it, so you can imagine it takes a while to get through enough to "review".

This Looks Like a Job for... Spider-Man?

Super-heroes, they can dodge speeding bullets, jump over tall buildings, do the things bugs can, and be your worst nightmare. However, it seems that each and every super-hero ever created has the same weakness in the end: The Video Game. Far too often we, as gamers, find ourselves playing our favourite comic book super-hero only to be left with a bad taste in our mouth. This is doubly so the case when the game in question is based off a movie starring said super-hero. Thank the gaming gods this game is not based off a movie.

Game Review - Dead Space
Written by Ryan L. Lopees

In Space, You Can Stilll Get the Crap Scared Out of You.

Title: Dead Space
Developer/Publisher: EA Redwood Shores/EA
Platforms: Playstation 3, Windows PC, Xbox 360
Release Date:  PS3/360 October 14, 2008, Windows October 20, 2008
Number of Players: Single-player

It's very, very rare when a game can live up to the hype that its own avertisers create. When I say "very rare" we are talking in the single digital percentile. Dead Space was one of those games with years of hype behind it. Add on top of that, the game had to meet the standards of a survival-horror title which makes is all that much difficult to meet those expectations. There are people who want to be scared, or at the very least creeped out. The trick there is a difficult one: Those who are looking to get "scared" are usually desensitised to most would-be scares. So how did Dead Space stack up in this area? Well, let's go ahead and float about in zero-G for a bit while we discuss Dead Space.

Game Review - Silent Hill: Homecoming
Written by Ryan L. Lopees
Monday, 27 October 2008 15:11

You Can Never Go Home Again, but You Can Chop There.

Title: Silent Hill: Homecoming
Publisher/Developer: Konami Digital Entertainment and Double Helix Games
Platforms: Playstation 3, Windows PC, and Xbox 360
Release Date: September 20, 2008 US, February 2009 EU
Number of players/Multiplayer: Single-player

Silent Hill: Homecoming is the sixth iteration in the series despite its original title of Silent Hill V. This marks the first foray for the series on the current-generation consoles. While I try to be objective in my reviews it is a bit hard sometimes not letting personal opinions get in the way. Silent Hill: Homecoming has been met with mixed reviews. Now to be fair, the Silent Hill as a series is an acquired taste. Hell, for that matter the ultra-violent survival-horror genre is an acquired taste. Personally, I live for these types of games and I’d be content if nothing but survival-horror games were released and it was ever lasting night. But hey, that’s just me.

Newsflash

Forums Are Now Live!

After an idiotic attempt to hack our sites by some kids, GTW is back up. Give it a couple days before each feature is reactivated. As for the "hackers", they left BIG fingerprints everywhere and have been reported to the IC3, FBI, and Interpol.
